As of December 2020, the Library provides EndNote 20. EndNote X9.2 remains available for both Windows and Mac users who are unable to convert their existing EndNote libraries to the new file format required as of version X9.3.

Which version should you install?

  • New users who are installing EndNote for the first time should install the latest version, EndNote 20.
  • Mac users running macOS Catalina must install the latest version. X9.2 and earlier versions are not compatible with macOS Catalina.
  • Current EndNote users looking to upgrade from older, pre-X9 versions might consider installing version X9.2 because:
    • Version X9.3 introduced a new file format for EndNote Library files and data folders, and requires converting your existing EndNote Libraries to this new file format, which is not backwards compatible with older versions of EndNote.
    • Some users have reported problems with the conversion process.
    • If you share your EndNote Libraries by emailing compressed library files to collaborators, those running older versions of EndNote will not be able to open them if you upgrade to the latest version.
    • Regardless of which version you choose to install, you should always back up your EndNote library prior to upgrading.

A few known compatibility issues:

  • EndNote 20 and EndNote X9 were not designed for macOS Big Sur and users may run into problems on this platform. Clarivate is in the process of testing and will update their compatibility page when testing is complete.
  • The Microsoft Edge browser cannot be used to install EndNote. Edge 10 users can install EndNote using Firefox or Chrome.
  • macOS Catalina requires EndNote version X9.3 or above.
  • EndNote X9 for Mac requires Microsoft Word 2016 version 15.41 or later, which may be an issue if your computer is not managed by OHSU. Here's how to check what version you have installed:
    1. Launch Microsoft Word.
    2. Select the Word menu from the toolbar at the top of the screen.
    3. Select About Word to see what version of Word 2016 you are running.
    4. If the version number is less than 15.41, you can download and install the Word 2016 version 15.41 updater from Microsoft prior to installing EndNote X9.

How to get EndNote for Windows

Before you begin:

  • Administrator rights are required to install this software on OHSU-managed computers.
  • You may be asked to close any running Microsoft Office apps, including Outlook.

How to install EndNote for Windows

  1. Determine from above whether you should install version X9.3 or X9.2 and then click on one of the following links to download the installer.
    • Click here to download EndNote 20 for Windows.
    • Click here to download EndNote X9.2 for Windows.
  2. Select Save, Save File, or Save As. If prompted, save the file to your Downloads or Temp folder.
  3. Once the download has completed, go to your Downloads or Temp folder.
  4. Double-click on the installer file.

  5. Select Yes to allow the installers to make changes.

  6. Select Yes to install EndNote.

  7. Follow the prompts to complete installation.

How to get EndNote for Mac

Before you begin:

  • Administrator rights are required to install this software on OHSU-managed computers.
  • Make sure you are running the latest version of Microsoft Word:
    1. Launch Microsoft Word.
